This year in 2023, Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami will fall on 24th of October. This is one of the most famed festivals in India. It marks the capstone of the ten- day jubilee of Navratri and is a day of great significance in Hindu culture. This festival isn't just about the palm of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana; it's a festivity of the eternal triumph of good over evil.  The Legend of Dussehra 

The legend of Dussehra is deeply rooted in the epic, Ramayana. According to the Hindu Holy Writ, Lord Rama, an manifestation of the god Vishnu, embarked on a trip to rescue his beloved woman, Sita, who had been kidnapped by the ten- headed demon king, Ravana. After a fierce battle that lasted for ten days, Lord Rama surfaced victorious on the tenth day, which is celebrated as Dussehra. 

  The burning of effigies of Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhakarna, inclusively known as Ravana Dahan, is a symbolic reenactment of Rama's palm over wrong. This ritual is a crucial highlight of the Dussehra fests, as it signifies the triumph of righteousness over nastiness. 

  Regional Variations 

  Dussehra is celebrated with vehemence across India, but there are some indigenous variations in the way it's observed. In the northern corridor of the country, especially in states like Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, effigies of Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhakarna are set ablaze in grand public displays. In the southern regions, particularly in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, it's observed as' Ayudha Puja,' during which people worship tools and instruments as a mark of respect for their work. 

  In West Bengal, Dussehra is synonymous with Durga Puja, a festivity of the goddess Durga's palm over the demon Mahishasura. In the eastern state of Odisha, the jubilee is observed as' Vijaya Dashami,' where people exchange gifts and visit cousins. These indigenous variations add a rich artistic shade to the jubilee.
